Clay Daly held off Brad Pounds to win the Late Model feature Saturday night at Bakersfield Speedway. Daly making his first appearance at the Speedway this year made it worth the trip. Winning the trophy dash earlier in the night, gave him a prime starting spot on the field for the 30 lap main event. With several lead changes throughout the main, Daly was able take home the win. Cody Barnett, Robert Sanders and Nick Bartels rounded out the top five in the race.

Chad Johnson won his first main event in the very competitive Hobby Stock division, followed by Jimmy Irwin and Devin Jones; Other race winners were Eric Silvius in American Stocks, followed by Brian Childress and Don Mead; and Chuck West in NMRA Midgets, followed by Don Kiefer and Britt Grissom.

BY MIKE GRIFFITH Californian staff writer mgriffith@bakersfield.com

Brad Pounds was back on top of his game Saturday night at Bakersfield Speedway.

Not that he was ever that far off. It’s just that after starting with two straight wins, finishes of fifth and ninth weren’t up to par.

So, armed with a new engine, the former track champion methodically worked his way through the field in a caution-filled race and after 25 laps he was back in a familiar spot — Victory Lane — in the IMCA Modified feature.

Pounds credited the new GM 604 Crate Motor for having just the right power for the dry/slick third-mile oval.

“At the beginning of the year we went to Arizona and three days in a a row we got our butts kicked by a crate motor,” he said. “We’ve been trying to get one ever since.”

Also aiding Pounds in his drive to victory was a series of cautions, which never let early leader Joey Yantis and those right behind him, to get away from the field.

Pounds, who started ninth, was fifth after 15 laps and five laps later he had the lead, powering around Yantis on the high side of the track.

“Everyone was running the bottom, you had to go high to drive around them,” he said.

Robby Sawyer finished second, followed by Yantis, Larry Hood and Cody Laney.

Gary Dutton led wire-to-wire to win the 20-lap Street Stock feature.

Dutton started on the outside of the front row and was never challenged during the race. In fact, after the midway point there was only one pass for position among the top five drivers, that being Lee Jensen, driving a borrowed car, beating out Joey Claborn for fourth,

Brian Shepherd fell into second at the start and stayed there the entire race. Billy Simkins quickly worked his way to third and finished there.

Bobby Michnowicz of Lomita powered into the lead midway though the 20-lap California Lightning Sprint feature and held off Scott Kinney for the win.

“This is a new car and its really a handful,” Michnowicz said. “This is a great series and I think I got a little lucky there. This is my favorite track to come to.”

Doug Nunes finished third.

Jacob Shepherd became the first repeat winner in the Mini Stock division as he led all but the first two laps en route to victory in the 20-lap feature. Shepherd was never challenged, although he was chased by his dad, Doug, who finished about eight car lengths back.

Dylan Baker finished third, Tina Wheeler-Bell was fourth and Johnny Winchester move

d into sole possession of the points led with a fifth-place finish.

Danny Lauer doesn’t often make the haul from the Central Coast to Bakersfield Speedway, but he makes the most of those trips. But until Saturday night he had never won on the third-mile clay oval. Lauer of Nipomo powered into the lead midway though the IMCA Modified feature and went on to a win in the 30-lap race. He was fourth in his only other outing this year. “We’ve been working hard on trying to win at this track,” Lauer said. “We’ve had a bunch of seconds, a fourth but could never get that win. “This year we said we were going to win here and it happened.” Steve Noland was several car lengths ahead of Bryan Clark in the early going as Lauer worked his way through the field. Lauer zipped past Clark to take second on lap 13 and one lap later he powered past Noland on the high shide of turn four to take the lead. “I thought I had it,” Noland said. “I was keeping it down low and all of a sudden I saw (Lauer) outside of me and he blew right past.” Lauer led the rest of the way but could never pull more than a few car lengths ahead. Noland finished second with Jerry Holder third. Larry Hood was fourth and Clark fifth. There have now been four different winners in the first five races.

Chad Johnson powered past Raymond Noland following a restart on lap 15 and went on to his first victory of the season in the 25-lap Hobby Stock feature. “Man, that was tough,” Johnson said. “After all my success last year and running like crap this year I wondered if I was ever going to win again.” And it wasn’t as easy as he made it look in the feature, as his crew (consisting mostly of family) worked after his heat race to solve a persistent engine miss. “I was ready to sell the car,” Johnson said. Raymond, making just his second start of the year, led the first 14 laps and held on to finish second after being passed by Johnson. Devin Jones finished a close third, followed by Matt Wankum and Jared Hollers.

Matt Lewis started the defense of his American Stock championship with a did-not-finish when a part broke while leading. Since then there has been no breakage and he’s been practically unbeatable. Lewis led the last 10 laps of Saturday night’s 20-lap feature for his third win in his last four outings, propelling him into the points lead. Lewis edged past Ethan Doston on the 11th lap and was not challenged the rest of the way, “Oh man, I have to thank (crew chief) Eddie Bradshaw for everything,” he said. “Some of the stuff he does on this car just blows my mind.” Tyler Irwin finished second, followed by Mark Irwin, Randy Harmon and Traci Childress.

Gavin Manning took the lead on the fifth lap and led the rest of the way to win the 15-lap Senior Mini Dwarf feature, his first of the season. Manny endured two restarts over the final three laps, holding off points leader Jeremy Clark, who finished second. Ryley Millard was third.

Kabe McLenny raced to victory in the caution-plagued Junior Mini Dwarf race, which was cut from 12 to 10 laps due to time constraints. Troy Morris III was second and Chloie Jones third.
