Oct 25, 2009 - Wire-to-wire Win

There was a heck of battle Saturday night in Super Street competition at Bakersfield Speedway, but all of it was taking place behind Jeremiah Van Scoy. Van Scoy led from start to finish to win the 25-lap feature in the George Steitz Memorial Dirt Track Shootout at the third-mile clay oval. "I have to thank everyone that helps, especially Richie McGowan," said Van Scoy. "This is my first win in this car. It took three years but I finally won in her." It was a dominating performance by Van Scoy, who was never seriously challenged after powering into the lead from the pole position. But it was quite the battle for position behind him with Bakersfield's Lonnie Welch getting around Toby Randolph of Nipomo with three laps to go to snare second. Randolph settled for third with Scott Pounds and Wayne Dotson right behind.

Bruce Johnson took the lead on the 14th lap then pulled away in the closing laps to win the 30-lap Hobby Stock feature. Dotson, who got out of his Super Street and quickly climbed into his Hobby Stock, led the first 13 laps but had a right-rear tire rip apart in turn two, ending his night. Johnson, who was right behind Dotson at that time, had the point when the race restarted and held it the rest of the way. "I don't know what to say ... the car was fast," Johnson said. "I never thought this was possible after sitting out most of the year." Lee Jensen finished second, followed by Jason Bannister, M'Lissa Manzella and Richie McGowan.

The night started with a frightening accident on the second lap of the Mini Stock feature which resulted in Bakersfield's Tina Wheeler's car pirouetting on the rear wheels, slamming hard into the backstretch wall, flipping and coming to rest on on four wheels. It took some time to extract the conscious Wheeler from the car, who was then transported to a hospital for further evaluation. Taylor Paddock of Bakersfield raced to victory in the 25-lap feature, taking the lead on the 16th circuit then holding off a late-race challenge from Dylan Hagar. "I've never raced so hard in my life, I can hardly breath," said Paddock, who had to endure five restarts after taking the lead. "I have to thank my dad for helping me put this beast together." Jordan Hagar finished third, Grant Koontz was fourth and Miranda Dotson fifth.

Lawnmower racing made its debut at the track with both drag and circle-track competition. Lyle Joslin won the super modified drags with Devin Hood jumping on the same machine to win the oval race. Debbie Guill won the modified drag competition and Cody Sneed won the oval competition.
